Finding viable sources of renewable energy has been a hot
topic in the past few years; and these days, more people than ever are getting
involved. President Obama has invested billions of dollars into green energy,
and even large corporations like Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) are pursuing energy industry deals. We’re even
fracking volcanoes in pursuit of steam-power.
So why all the hubbub? There are several reasons people are
choosing to get involved:
1.
Global
Warming—Though some still argue against its existence, Global Warming
presents a huge threat. The buildup of greenhouse gases is causing a rise in
the average temperature in our atmosphere. If we do not find an alternative
energy source to burning fossil fuels and consuming other non-renewable
resources, we face major climate changes, loss of food sources, and potential
elimination of a livable habitat.
2.
Peak Oil
& Decline—One of our most over-used natural resources is oil.
Unfortunately, it’s also not a renewable resource, and we’re burning through it
so quickly that we will soon face the inevitable decline and eventual halt in
supply.
3.
Energy
Security—Because we depend on natural resources like oil and fossil fuels
for energy, it makes individual countries dependent on others for supply. This
can lead to exorbitant prices, not enough resources, and significant vulnerabilities
because of a lack of access.
4.
A Sure
Investment—Besides being good for the environment and national energy
independence, the energy industry is a surefire way to see a return on
investment—as long as you invest in a successful initiative. The eventual loss
of our natural resources is imminent at the rate we’re going, and there will
soon be no choice but to rely on renewable energy if we are to keep earth
livable.
